Hebrew Study for 4th - 6th graders

THE GOAL

To equip our kids with the Hebrew skills they need to be able to walk into any synagogue in the world and participate in the service. After completing Hebrew Connect, each child should be able to fluently read a siddur (prayer book) and understand what key prayers mean.

HOW IT WORKS

Hebrew meets after Kehillah, following lunch, at 12:15 – 1:15 PM At Wise Center. Registration is completed at the same time for Kehillah registration.

Hebrew education is offered for students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and it is a requirement for students who are planning to celebrate B’nai Mitzvah at Wise Tempe Our Hebrew curriculum is siddur based and focuses on building decoding skills (alef-bet, vowels, the ability to sound out syllables and word and familiarizing students with the key prayers from the Jewish liturgy.

To schedule and maintain a Bar or Bat Mitzvah date at Wise Temple, a student must be enrolled in and consistently attend Kehillah as well as either Sunday afternoon in person Hebrew or private tutoring with an instructor approved and supervised by the Director of Education and/or the staff member with that responsibility. Students participating in private tutoring must still meet the Kehillah enrollment and attendance requirements.

Students who attend Rockwern Academy may be exempt from participation in a Wise Temple Hebrew class or private tutoring. To quality for exemption, the child must participate in a Hebrew assessment at Wise Temple and demonstrate adequate Hebrew knowledge. Hebrew assessments are conducted and progress reports sent to parents twice during the school year in the fall and spring.
