Downtown Lunch and Learn | Reading Jonah Backward

Tradition has it that we read the Book of Jonah on Yom Kippur afternoon because its message strengthens the worshiper’s sense of repentance, helping everyone toward the finish line after a very long day. The trouble is, the Book of Jonah’s lesson can be enigmatic. As we prepare for the High Holidays, join Rabbi Hirsch to read the book backwards, to find out how that may unlock a clearer meaning for this most important and spiritually energizing biblical story. There’s a lot more to it than a reluctant prophet and a magical whale.
