SUMMARY:Tuesdays with Torah | Women of the Talmud
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Matt Check \nThis series will explore the vital role of women in the Talmud\, shedding light on their influence in a traditionally male-dominated rabbinic world. Though often less emphasized\, women appear as scholars\, leaders\, and moral voices who both challenge and shape Jewish thought. We will examine the stories of notable figures such as Bruriah\, Yalta\, and Rachel—Rabbi Akiva’s devoted wife—highlighting their contributions and enduring impact on Jewish tradition.

SUMMARY:Tuesdays with Torah | Ezekiel’s Insight on Trauma and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Jamie Starr \nThe Book of Ezekiel presents the experience and reflections of an exiled people — a people who had endured displacement\, trauma\, and hardship. In this class\, we will read excerpts from Ezekiel that reveal the complex emotional\, spiritual\, and physical realities of exile. By exploring themes of autonomy (or lack thereof)\, chaos\, and hope\, we will uncover some of the psychological and spiritual struggles of those living in subjugation. Ultimately\, we will see the Book of Ezekiel as both an ancient text\, and a living document that continues to resonate with themes of loss\, resilience\, and redemption.

SUMMARY:Torah Take 2 | God Concepts in the Bible and Rabbinic Literature: A Sampling to Stimulate our Personal Belief
DESCRIPTION:Contrary to what most people think\, our classical literature of Bible\, Talmud and other rabbinic literature are far from monolithic in theology or emphasis on qualities of God. These great sources reveal wide-ranging ideas of God\, with many parallel tracks or viewpoints\, none competing with one another\, but each to challenge and to stimulate our own theology and personal ideas of God. Rabbi Kamrass will introduce us to some God concepts we might expect\, as well as many others that would be unexpected and even surprising and expansive in their approach from so many centuries ago. Examining these characteristics of God revealed in our literature is a sampling to whet our own spiritual appetite\, and to challenge and enlarge our own perspectives.

SUMMARY:Tuesdays with Torah | The Road Less Traveled: Benjamin of Tudela and His Travel Diary: A Window into 12th-century Jewish Life
DESCRIPTION:The 12th century was a time of great flux with the significant influences of Christian and Islamic cultures and their clash of power throughout the ancient world. One intrepid Jewish traveler\, Benjamin of Tudela\, made his way from his native Spain to the Middle East\, northern Mesopotamia\, Persia\, the Arabian Peninsula\, North Africa\, Italy\, Greece\, western China and Europe over the span of 13 years. At each stop he made careful notes in his diaries about the conditions and well-being of the Jewish communities\, large and tiny. One of the real “eye-witness” historians\, when Benjamin of Tudela’s travel diary and extensive notes were published 700 years later\, it opened a window into Jewish life and how it differed widely based on local circumstances. Rabbi Kamrass will lead us through that window to learn about Jewish life in the Middle Ages\, examining how its tensions and themes are both different and similar to ours today.

SUMMARY:Tuesdays with Torah | What is Kabbalah?
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Check\, Director of Lifelong Learning\, as he delves into the fascinating world of Jewish mysticism. This two-part survey will explore the origins and evolution of Kabbalah\, from its early foundations in biblical and rabbinic thought to the emergence of the Zohar in medieval Spain and the revolutionary teachings of Isaac Luria in Safed. We’ll examine how Kabbalah shaped Jewish prayer and practice\, including the development of Kabbalat Shabbat\, and how it influenced later movements like Hasidism. In the second session\, we will explore Kabbalah’s central ideas—Ein Sof\, the Sefirot\, Tzimtzum\, and Tikkun Olam—as well as modern scholarly perspectives\, including the work of Gershom Scholem. We’ll also discuss contemporary adaptations\, from traditional study to the popularization of Kabbalah in modern culture.

SUMMARY:Torah Take 2 | Great Jewish Debates
DESCRIPTION:Since the inception of Jewish history (from Abraham and God to Theodor Herzl and Rabbi Isaac M. Wise)\, Jews have engaged in the art of deliberation\, examination\, and disagreement. Looking through the lenses of the Biblical Era\, Rabbinic Era\, and Modern Era\, this class identifies and analyzes some of the most heated and consequential debates of the Jewish People. Beyond the historical\, political\, ethical\, and spiritual challenges presented\, what makes these disputations so compelling is that nearly all of them are still being argued today.
