In this series\, we will explore the early modern European culture in which Shakespeare lived and wrote\, examine what Jewish life was like in that world\, consider how Jews were portrayed by other authors\, and investigate what may have inspired Shakespeare to create the complex and controversial character of Shylock. Each session will include an exploration of 16th-century history and literature\, but no prior knowledge of Shakespeare is required!
