Legend tells us that even with the Egyptians in pursuit, the Israelites stood at the shores of the Red Sea arguing about which tribe would step into the waters first, when Nahshon of the tribe Judah, "sprang forward into the sea." Only with the action of one individual, the midrash teaches, did God then make the miracle of splitting the Red Sea, Real repair of the world, real change and healing comes when our prayers, the words of our mouths, are joined by our deeds, the work of our hands.
It was this midrash that moved Rabbi Lewis Kamrass to challenge our Congregation in 1990 to step into the waters of social action through WiseUP: THE ULTIMATE PROJECT. Clearly, to do what is "just" (tzedakah), to "repair the world" (tikkun olam), requires us not just to argue and discuss the critical issues of our society, but to act with faith and courage and, like Nahshon, step into unknown spaces. Only then can we share in God’s miracles. For these reasons, social action is a hallmark of our mission and our ideals at Wise Temple.
Last year, more than 800 individuals in our Congregation took action through WiseUP Social Action Volunteer Projects. Whether in our night shelter for homeless families within our building, our soup kitchen, our involvement in inner-city schools, we look forward to working with every individual who seeks to repair the world around us through our own efforts. Together, we will go out into the community with the confidence and with the hope that our deeds will bring healing, and perhaps even a small miracle or two for ourselves and, most especially, for the many who are in need.
Do you like to cook, serve, donate, laugh, play games, talk, read, socialize with old and new friends, picnic, party, organize, hug, create, smile, pamper others, and bring joy to the lives of those less fortunate?
