Wise Temple features one of the largest madrichim programs in the country, with nearly 100 high schoolers serving as teaching assistants in our Religious School (both Sundays and Wednesdays). What makes the difference in our program? Our madrichim don't only run errands to the office and pass out papers in the classroom. They are teachers and role models. They prepare lessons on the value of the month and then share with their students how they model that value themselves. They add a "coolness" factor to being Jewish. They lead small group discussions and tutor kids individually in Hebrew. They introduce new and exciting games to review classroom material. And they provide a safe and loving environment for each of our students.
Madrichim not only make a difference in the classroom, they also serve as staff at our youth group events for younger children, at our retreats, and at special events. The madrichim bring a sense of ruach (spirit) to each of these programs that invigorates everyone around them.
Our madrichim truly function as a team. Most classrooms have three madrichim, and our upperclassmen help train the new madrichim each year. The program also includes numerous opportunities to develop teaching and leadership skills, including workshops throughout the year and a course at Kulanu, the Cincinnati Reform Jewish High School. In addition, there are social events just for our madrichim, such as our Madrichim Thank You Lunch in December.
Our investment in the madrichim is an investment not only in their Jewish lives but in the lives of all of our students. At a time when personal attention and a connection to a larger community are essential, these madrichim are making the difference!
The madrichim program is coordinated by Rachel Kasten, Assistant Director of Education & Youth Programs. Please contact Rachel at 513-793-2556 or click to email her for more information.
