Isaac M. Wise Temple

The ancient rabbis teach us that "the study of Torah (Jewish knowledge) is equal to all the commandments, because our study leads us to doing them." At the Isaac M. Wise Temple, the commandment to study Torah is a religious mandate that we approach both seriously AND joyously. Whether for our children, our teenagers, or adults, we are committed to the principle of lifelong Jewish learning as the best way of applying the values of Judaism to our own lives. Our learning is not only about the knowledge that we gain, but also to be imbued with an understanding that guides us in our deeds. We grow as people through the insights we gain in study, and the fruit of that study becomes apparent in our actions.

Wise Temple's expansive program of adult learning, Eitz Chayim, provides the structure and the opportunities for serious and joyous study of Judaism. Our study of Torah seeks to enlighten, to stimulate, and to challenge our thought, while also being relevant to our daily lives. Our study enables us to think and to act in larger and deeper ways.

Whether you have a good background in Jewish knowledge and texts or you are jumping into the "waters of Torah" for the first time, there is a place for you and your personal Jewish enrichment in the study of Torah at Wise Temple. Our classes, programs and discussions are accessible, warm, and inviting. They are meant for you. Furthermore, you will leave not only enriched with insight, but also spiritually nourished with a Jewish tradition that can deepen and enrich your daily life.

Here are some frequently asked questions about adult learning at Wise Temple:

1) Who attends our classes?

Everyone in the congregation is invited to take a class. The classes are a real mix of ages, background, knowledge, and experience.

2) What if I have limited time and cannot attend every class?

There is no homework for any of these sessions, and there is no attendance requirement. These classes are for you and are meant to fit into your busy schedule. We offer a number of programs and classes that are formatted into one session, making it easier to participate.

3) How do I register?

There are three easy ways to register:
1) Call Anne Powers at 793-2556 or click here to email Anne
2) Click here to Register online
3) Stop by the Temple and register in person

4) Can non-members attend classes?

Yes. Non-members can attend but there may be an additional fee, and if space is limited, Wise Temple members receive priority.

5) What if I do not know anyone?

If you are a first-timer and would like a helping hand, we have a buddy system. Just call Anne Powers at 793-2556 and let us know that you would like a buddy. A member of our adult education committee will be happy to escort you to your first session and make sure you are comfortable.

6) Is childcare available?

If you have children in our religious school, some of our classes are scheduled during religious school hours so that you will not need to find childcare, but we do not have childcare available on Sunday mornings for young children. If there is interest on Wednesday afternoons during our adult Hebrew classes we will try to arrange childcare for younger children. Please let us know if you are interested in this option.

7) How do I decide which classes to sign up for?

If you are not sure which classes to choose, please see our guide in the back, where we have suggested some classes that might match your interests and life experiences.
